What is the difference between a UPGRADE Windows Vistaa and NON UPGRADE Windows Vistaa?

I have Windows 98. Can I upgrade straight to Windows XP?

  • I want to update my computer system. It's still on Windows 98. I want to upgrade it to Windows XP. Can I just buy Windows XP Home Edition and put it in and then bam! upgraded? (Obviously I have to go through the instructions screens). Or do I have to buy something else in between. (I'm just using an example because I don't know computers THAT well, so no need to correct if I'm wrong). Example (this is if I CAN'T update straight to XP): It begins as Windows 98. I'd have to buy the next upgrade after 98 (Windows 2000?) in order to be able to upgrade to XP? I really hope I'm making sense...

The answer is YES assuming you meet the minimum requirements which are listed below. Windows XP Home Edition System Requirements Published: August 24, 2001 Here's What You Need to Use Windows XP Home Edition • PC with 300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233-MHz minimum required;* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended • 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features) • 1.5 gigabyte (GB) of available hard disk space.* • Super VGA (800 × 600) or higher resolution video adapter and monitor • CD-ROM or DVD drive • Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device I would warn you that Windows XP takes up more computer resources (Hard drive space, memory) so this could actually cause your computer to run slower. Your best bet is to find a cheap sale on a newer computer and then transfer the data from the old computer to the new one.

The normal action is to upgrade from Win98 to XP. You might not find it worthwhile though, a lot of older computers will run much faster on Windows 98. The minimum requirements for XP which Microsoft advertises, are too low to give you a satisfactory result.

You have to tell the components your pc has because you might have 128 mb of ram and it will be reeeeeeeaaaally slow!

You can just buy the XP home edition, and install it. You need not do anything else. Just boot off the CD with XP installation disk in it and follow the prompts.

If you meet the system requirements you can install any Operating System you want if you are buying the full version. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314865 If you have an XP upgrade disk then yes you can go from 98 to XP directly See Method 2 http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316941 ebay or an OEM dealer or someplace similar is the only way to get XP now.You can ask where you bought your PC. http://shop.ebay.com/windows-xp-upgrade

If you go to microsoft you will find what requirements needed for each Operating System.I had an old machine that was shipped to me with 98SE in 1999,and when I upgraded I used XP Lite from staples. You know it takes 512MB of ram to run XP.And finding the right ram for your old computer can and will be costly.90.00 dollars for each stick of ram of 128MB was a waste of money. So I went to Dell and got a Duel core computer with a faster processor,4GB of ram, more then enough to run with.Vista 64 bit, speakers and a 19" monitor for under 500.00.My old Dell in 1999 cost 850.00 with less stuff and paid extra for the speakers.I will tell you to go to cnet.com and then over to pcworld.com and read reviews on budget computers to get an idea on what you may get for 300.00 to 500.00.I believe support for a lot of XP will stop from microsoft in the next two years.Hope I helped you out a little.

Yes. You may need to get a bigger hard drive to store your stuff and possibly more RAM if it is 128 or less. I'm guessing it has either a Pentium III or a K6 processor so it is running at 500Mhz or less. This is okay for windows XP but it will be a little bit slow.
