Is There a Difference Between These Two Computers?

  • Hi - without revealing the brand, etc. Here are two blind computers two compare. One is $80 cheaper, and I'm just wondering if there is a significant difference between the two. The specs on the computers are completely the same except for the following: - The first has 4GB RAM @ 800MHz - 4 DIMMs and a processor Benchmarked at 2609. - The second has 4GB RAM @ 800MHz- 2 DIMMS and a processor Benchmarked at 3185 Is there a significant difference between these two computers? Is one substantially more powerful or are they essentially the same machine?

  • Answer:

there is nothing different they are the same

yeah "4GB RAM @ 800MHz- 2 DIMMS" is significantly better because it came out with a better benchmark.

the same

The 2 systems should remain the same all the way across the board, and the benchmark scores were most likely different because of one or both of the following reasons ... First, if the teste were done by 2 different articles/companies/reviewers/etc then the odds are that they used 2 different sets of software or benchmarking programs for their info. There are several mainstream, home-written, and extended sets of test criteria for any system hardware. Second the system probably uses shared video, or in some other way benefits from the fact the system with the 2 x 2gig DIMMS has more actual RAM in the primary RAM slot (which is more accessible by the system bus, anything in the 2nd-4th slots is considered "expanded RAM", and is used less often for simply running Windows and common daily software) than the system with the 4 x 1gig sticks of RAM. Unless You're suing it for things like video editing, hardcore scientific equations, or full-on 3D-spatial renderings in 1024x768 and 720pixel or higher resolutions, You should be perfectly fine using either system as a general user/gamer/Non-Techie type. Good Luck!.

The second computer is better. The extra 2 dimm's don't allow for greater bandwidth as there are two on each channel. DDR2 motherboards have two ram channels and thus it's ideal to pair up dimm modules, but you only get any bandwidth boost from the use of both channels once - the 4 dimms do not have a channel each and typically 2 dimm's have lower latency than 4.

Well, a more important piece of information would be processor brand and model numbers. That would give us a better idea as to the performance difference and value. Since we don't know what program you used to benchmark the CPU's we don't know if it is biased toward one brand of CPU or what. I will say that there is no difference between 4GB in 4 dimms and 2GB in 2 dimms as far as performance goes. But likely the one with the higher benchmark number will be faster.

Well there are actually a number of things to consider here. Having 2 DIMMS instead of 4 is an immediate bonus because it allows for more DIMMS to be added in the future if you feel like you need too. I don't know which "benchmark" is being used on this memory but it looks like the memory from the second computer is probably faster and a better quality. I can almost for sure tell you that the second computer is the more expensive one. There is some better performance but whether or not it's significant enough to pay an extra 80 bucks on it depends soley on the depths of your pockets.
