How to improve video resolution?

Would a new video card improve overall performance?

  • I have a pretty old PC with a 1.8GHz Intel Celeron, 768MB of memory and a 64MB Intel Graphics Controller. I don't use this computer for gaming and was hoping to buy a cheap new video card mainly so I could bump my resolution up to something higher than 1280x720 as well as improve performance slightly. Would upgrading to an EVGA GeForce 6200 512MB 64-bit DDR2 PCI 2.1 video card noticeably improve overall performance any? i.e. Images rendering slowly, Firefox not scrolling smoothly, general lag and slushiness when opening, minimizing windows, Flash running at extremely low framrates etc. or can that be blamed on the CPU?

  • Answer:

It would help some of those issues. Like the lag from scrolling is VGA related. However, if you want to speed your entire system up, there are many things to take into account. With 768 mb of ram, your system can probably at max run 30 processes with no lag or slow down. If you can eliminate a lot of processes that you use that can speed it up as well. Or simply get more ram. The video card will help with graphical performance, such as scroll lag and images rendering slowly *(if you mean on websites - that is most likely a connection or processor hinder, whereas if you mean images you already have on your hard drive then the video card would help). Flash would run in higher frame rates, but the opening and minimizing of windows is system ram related. I do not know which motherboard you have, but I highly recommend 2 gb of ram and that video card and your system will run much smoother than it is now.

It would not help with the general slowness that you are describing. A graphics card wouldn't help. If your computer COULD SCROLL at one time, and CAN"T NOW the graphics card ISN'T THE PROBLEM despite what anyone may seem to be convinced of. That is caused by a slow CPU and the gradual windows slowdown that occurs over time. Try def ragging your hard drive. If that doesn't help restore windows after backing stuff up. A Graphics card would give you better resolution, but unless your playing games. Don't bother. You really don't want to put money into something that is near the end of its life. Keep in mind that resolution is dependent on screen size and Graphics card. Its 1280 by 720 all your monitor supports? If I were you I'd tough it out as long as you can and pounce on the best deal I see. If you want to get adventuresome build your own if you really know what you want.
