What do I need for a digital tv tuner for the computer?

Will a TV Tuner Card for my computer take the place of a cable box? or will I need both cable box + tuner card?

  • Where I live, Cablevision has made it so that you can no longer have a coaxial cable come out of the wall and into the tv. Instead, you have to buy a cable box for each tv :( I wanted to buy a TV tuner card so that I could watch TV on my PC and I was wondering if I would need to get another box in addition to a tv tuner card.     Possibly. It depends on what your cable company is providing and what features the TV tuner has on it. If the TV tuner is digital (and supports "digital cable") there is a chance that the card will be able to pick up channels not encrypted by your provider. My cable company does not encrypt the basic cable channels but does encrypt the more expensive ones. I only have basic cable so I actually can use mine in this way. It is also possible that the tuner will have a spot for a "CableCard" this is a little microchip you put into the tuner which allows it to operate as the cable box. Typically this is a feature on expensive TVs and probably won't be on the card you get, but it is an option if your cable company allows CableCards. Otherwise, you will probably need the cable box too.
