Is hardware RAID worth it?

RAID 1 without hardware support.?

  • I would like to know if I can set-up RAID 1 with windows 7 using Windows 7 without RAID support on the motherboard.

  • Answer:

Yes, it is called a "Mirrored Volume" (you need Windows 7 Professional or better though) Go to Computer Management -> Disk Management. Now right click on one of the disks you would like to us as a Mirror and you should see the option of "New Mirrored Volume".

Windows 7 Professional and higher offer software versions of RAID 0 (stripped) and RAID 1 (Mirrored) via the Disk Management console. Motherboard based RAID controllers will be significantly faster, if they're offered. They also work with the Home Premium version of Windows 7. Unless you need 24/7 data access, I recommend skipping RAID 1 and setting up a periodic backup. RAID 1 gives you immediate access following a single hard drive failure. However, any viruses damaging your disk files are also immediately replicated. An independent backup is the more useful tool in the virus attack case.
