What is a good external DVD burner to buy?

Should I buy an external DVD burner?

  • I do quite a bit of burning, I use my laptop internal dvd burner though. The burner is great but Iv been using it for 2 years now and Im getting the feeling it might be wearing down. I was at Best Buy the other day and I saw a Sony DVD burner for around $70 bucks. It looked good, Im not to fancy, I just want something that can burn good quality. I use IMGburn software to burn my entertainment will an external burner change the quality? & is it faster?

    External CD burners are NEVER EVER faster. They generally use USB and if your lucky Firewire and those speeds can not be matched by even IDE. I suggest you get an internet SATA II cd/DVD burner. You can get one cheap on www.newegg.com or www.geeks.com for under 20 bucks and its easy to install! Dont waste your time with overpriced external DVD drivers

I am new to Laptops.. I have a Refurbished D600(DELL).. I bought a Firewire IEEE1394 Card for the Laptop..so I can use my SONY Ext. DVD Drive.. Firewire is called High Speed Data Tranfer.. === Haven't done any projects on the Laptop--yet.. Still learning it.. But the Ext. DVD Drive by SONY is 100-% reliable..mine is old..and its a real benefit for my DVD-video Files.. I can pull the file off a Burned DVD-video and edit it..and burn it back.. My ROXIO software recognizes it as a DVD Player.. ..and ROXIO..COPY Disk uses it as a SOURCE..and my Internal S-ata DVD Drive is the DESTINATION..it has never failed.. Old Model#...DRX-720UL ...DRU-720A(driver)..[end]

External burners are good to use with laptops since they have higher burn speeds than the internal 8x that come with laptops, even with a USB connection.
