Can you hook a USB 2.0 device (External Hard Drive) to, what is described on a website, as just USB.?
-
I am supposed to be buying a IBM Thinkpad T-23, but the website I am buying it from describes it as having "1 (USB) display". This normally wouldn't be a problem, except the computer only comes with 30 gigs of space, and that is definitely not enough for me. I decided to look for a USB splitter and an external hard drive. The external hard drive that I want to buy says USB 2.0 and I need to know if this is a problem, or if there are specifically External hard drives for the old USB ports.

Answer:
It will work. But it will be very very slow. Even external USB 2.0 drives are slow, so I can only imagine how slow it would be if hooked to a USB 1.0 port. But yes it will still work. Your better off just buying a bigger internal hard drive. Theyre actually pretty easy to install on a laptop.

As the above say, it *should* work but may be slow. However you need to take the following into consideration... A USB2 disk drive that is bus powered will try to pull too much power out of a single USB1 socket... so the disk drive will probably NOT spin up correctly. If you buy a USB hub (what you call a splitter) make sure that it's USB2 and that it has an external power supply. I ran foul of that on an elderly Compaq M300 with one USB 1 port... not enough juice to run the first external hard drive I bought.
USB 2.0 is backward compatible with USB 1.0 and 1.1 . It should run fine. According to Lenovo (they made IBM thinkpads) you should have two USB ports.
