How do I install a dell 920 without an install CD?

I'm trying install CD/DVD burner on the same IDE as my hdd and only one or the other will show up!?!?

  • I have a Dell Optiplex gx270 with bios version A03 2.4GHz 512mb 80GB hdd. It only has a floppy drive so I want to put a CD/DVD burner on it to load windows xp home through it. I have two IDE connectors but it seems only the IDE 1 is picking anything up. I'm trying install a Samsung CD/DVD burner on the same IDE as my hdd and only one or the other will show up. Or.. I have IDE 1 and IDE 2. Only IDE 1 seems to let anything show up.. Here is what I did: I first took the IDE cable with a middle connector and plugged it into IDE 2 on my motherboard and left my hdd on IDE 1. The hard drive showed up but the CD/DVD drive did not. It said, "not installed". The second time: I disconnected my hdd from IDE 1 and connected the CD/DVD drive to IDE 1. and I connected the hdd up to IDE 2. The hdd didn't show up but the CD/DVD showed up and started loading setup for windows. (which is what I want! but I need the hdd too obviously). The third time: I tried hooking up both the CD/DVD and the hdd into IDE 1 and nothing in IDE 2. I hooked up the CD/DVD to the first (gray) IDE connector and the hdd to the last (black) IDE connector. It recognized the hdd but not the CD/DVD. So, I then tried it the exact opposite: The hdd in the middle (gray) and the CD/DVD to the last connector (black). It recognized the CD/DVD and not the hard drive..lol I have now clue what to do now.. I can't find anything in bios A03 that will help me.. I even tried pushing F12 (which brings me to the boot device menu) and I tried number 6. which is "IDE Drive Diagnostics" which seems to go out and search for drives but it says: Primary SATA Drive 0: No device Secondary SATA Drive 0: No device Primary IDE Drive 0: HDD or CD/DVD (which ever is connected) Drive 1: No device Secondary IDE Drive 0: No device Drive 1: No device Even if I connect anything into the Secondary IDE, it still says "No device". Thanks for everyones help on this! Joey

  • Answer:

Dells normally prefer the device to be jumpered for CS (Cable Select), look on the rear of the drive and if you need to move the jumper. It's most likley in MA or MASTER at the moment. Try that first, you should notice the hdd is also in CS, it will detect the drive and the DVD on the same cable then if you need it to.
