Why won't my Sub/Amp work?

Why wont my usb ports work?

  • Ok So i have a Toshiba Satellite running Windows Vista home basic and 2 usb ports on the left side of the laptop and one on the right. About sometime in September my right usb port quite working and the left ones wouldn't work with my webcam.. Only when i plug in ANY webcam. No matter what webcam it is, it wont work. Anything else plugged into them would work.i first had a Logitech quickcam and it worked fine until like September, so i went and got a new one and it wont do anything. The right usb port wont work no matter what i plug into it. The left ones work except for my webcam. When i installed the webcam it installs fine it says and says the drivers have been installed for the webcam. When i restart the computer after and plug in the webcam There should be a green light on the webcam and nothing shows up at all. When i go to the webcams program it doesnt show video or audio. Just a black screen. it says unknown device not recognized. i have uninstalled and reinstalled my usb ports, shut the laptop completely down for 30 minutes and restarted. Nothing is working and its driving me crazy!!!! i have googled so many times and failed. When my webcam is plugged in it makes the sound of it connected but if i barely move the cord or jiggle the cord it makes the sound of it disconnected. Can anyone help me so i can use all of my usb ports left and right and use my webcam again? it would make me soooo happy and less stressed haha, Thank you all so much.

  • Answer:

From the sound of it your right usb port is completely dead. The two on the left are likely about to go out from what sounds like a loose board/connection. From all the plugging in and unplugging, this weakens the contacts where the usb board connects to the motherboard and eventually they stop working. It happens over time, especially with heavy use. Hate to sound negative, but a Toshiba running Vista Home Basic without a built-in webcam probably wasn't built with longevity in mind, more like inexpensive and accessible. Simply put, cheap construction along with normal wear and tear caused the ports to no longer function, either by going out or disconnecting from the main board. You can take it to a repair shop and see if it can be repaired, but I wouldn't put more than $50 towards it. From the description, its probably over 2 and 1/2 years old and wasn't expensive to begin with. I vote suck it up and buy a new laptop, or live without USB ports. EDIT for clarity: The webcam likely requires too much power for the left ports to run it considering there isn't a strong, stable connection caused by loose contacts.
