How to hook up a windows 98 Hard Drive as a slave drive without a jumper cable?

  • Ok I'm going to try and keep it simple. P.S. I have SOME knowledge of computer and such but not a whole lot, so please keep the answer as simple as possible. Ok, so my family wants to get rid of our old windows 98 computer, which doesnt start up anymore and i suspect the power core has shot out. So I believe the Hard Drive still works. I was reading online and it always mentions a jumper cable, but when I looked inside my computer I could not find one! I looked at my ribbon and it has an extra port thing that says slave above it, so I thought I could just plug that in as well as the power supply and get the drive to run that way, my computer recognizes that the 98 HD is there, but it ask me to format it, something I really don't want to do. Any way, i can think of accessing it, I'm asked to format it. Example I tried to use File Scavanger a file restoring program and when I told it to scan the E: drive(the 98 HD) it asked me to format it first.

    Jumper cables are what you use to start a car when the battery is dead. A jumper for your hard drive is a little plastic tab that connects two pins together. Your old hard drive likely already has one to set it to master, just move the tab over to the slave setting. See my source for pics and more info:

I suggest that you buy one of those hard drive enclosure and use it trough Usb

If your computer sees the hard drive, then you have no need to set it up as a slave. Sounds like the file system is corrupted on your old hard drive. Either find a program that can restore the data or face the facts that your information is gone.
