Usb ports not working?

USB PORTS NOT WORKING. it is not recognized?

everytime I plug in something to my usb ports on my windows xp laptop a message pops up saying the device is not recognized. I did a system recovery yesterday and everything is in the factory settings so its like having a new computer. I can't update any drivers because they pop up as unknown device. and there are at least 4 other usb ports under the Unknown device so it comes up as this- unknown device usb port usb port usb port usb port in the device manager page. I tried plugging in my printer usb, and my ipod but none of them are recognized, I actually installed a new printer in my computer but the usb I guess isn't detected? and wont print anything. How do I make it so my computer can detect my usb chips like my printer?
