CD/DVD ROM undetected after windows 7 install!!!?
-
I need help!!!! I upgraded my Dell 1737 Studio laptop from Vista home premium to Windows 7 home premium. When install was complete my CD/DVD ROM drive was not under the computer tab. I checked the Device Manager. There were no CD/DVD ROM drive listed there either. I researched and tried many things. I followed these directions: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 with no luck. I put in my serial number into dell website and searched for drivers. None of them fixed the problem. I read somewhere that deleting upper and lower filters in the registry would fix the problem. So I tried that again. No luck just more problems. After the reboot after deleting registry keys. Windows would not start at all. I had to restart in repair mode ( i think that is what it said) So that got me back into windows 7 but still no CD/DVD ROM drive. Finally I reinstalled windows 7 as a clean install this time. (first time I used the upgrade as to not lose all my info on laptop). It did a driver search and installed 4 drivers. None for CD/DVD ROM. It didn't do that with the first upgrade install. Although it didn't fix anything. This is truly driving me crazy. I got to Microsoft online support for help. I put in my product ID and it says that I will have to pay $49 for help. Even though I purchased windows 7 legally and it is activated. I really don't think there is anything physically wrong with my drive itself. It worked perfectly before the install. Any and all ideas or help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Answer:
If you can’t find the right CD/DVD drivers manually I would recommend just getting a software program that can do it for you. There is a program I use which will find drivers for just about all hardware devices. The best part is it takes a snapshot of your system specifications and matches the right driver to go with it. Perform a free driver scan at: http://www.drivers-updates.net/drivers/dvd-cd-combo-rom-drivers-download.html You can also search by the following link: http://www.techsupportforum.com/

That laptop is new, the optical drive is sata. The dvd drive probably shares a sata channel with the hard drive. Expand the sata controller and see if the dvd drive is there. If not, try updating drivers for the sata channel. Dell should be the one to call for help on this, not MS. There are known bios conflicts and premature drive failures on this laptop. http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19251623/19451286.aspx
