How to reinstall windows vista on a usb?

  • Hi m computer crashed from an update to install a windows service pack, it keeps trying to install the service pack and goes from 36000/86000 or something but stops and has all these numbers. i can't go to safe mode or anything. i was wondering if i could reinstall vista on a usb and if you can show me a link of where to install it. And to mention i cannot access command prompt

  • Answer:

hi paul you can install windows vista from a usb memory stick.... however you cant install vista to a memory stick and then run it from the memory stick for example you can transfer all the nessecary installation files for vista on a memory stick then configure the system bios to boot from usb memory stick... however not all bios programs can boot from usb... but most made in the last 2 or 3 years should be ok..... and to do this simply press delete to enter the bios... then go to advanced bios features>boot order> change the order to usb memory stick first,cd rom second and hard drive third... then remember to "save and exit setup" to save the changes you have made to the cmos... your pc will now restart you should check out the arcticle at http://www.bootdisk.com/pendrive.htm ... this will explain everything... and it may even question my answer.. from what this writes you can run windows vista from a usb memory stick... however this isnt a straight forward procedure... so expect some serious head scratching and headaches...! summary : remember to change bios settings ( e.g boot order ) and remember to save the changes ... and even if your bios dosent have the usb flash drive boot option you can also try other usb alternatives... my motherboard has 4 usb bootable devices... note : when your pc crashes during the updates is there a bsod ( blue screen of death ) ... since the numbers in the crash dump indicate the cause of the problem ( e.g memory(ram ) ... ) if you can submit any stop codes( found on the blue screen ) this may help me assess your pc,s problem even more.... good luck paul !
