Why wont my speakers work?

• I have no idea what is wrong with my speakers a couple days ago they just stopped working. I went to the sound settings and its not on mute. I dont think its the speakers, but i think its the computer because i had tried the speakers on a friends computer and they had worked fine. When i go to sound settings it also says that there is no audio device is plugged in, but, i do and i made sure that it was in the correct hole. i dont have speakers that come with the computer there like add ons, but if any body has any ideas help me and please detail how i can fix it.

  Have you added any new hardware or software to your computer? Go into the control panel, click on system, then Device Manager. Which items have a question mark next to them, any? These are the devices which aren't installed properly. Right click on the one for your sound card (audio device) and choose to update the driver. Have Windows search automatically so it can look online for the driver.
