Wired Xbox 360 controller for Windows 7 computer?

How do I set it up? I've already put it into the Laptops USB port but all it does it make a noise and nothing happens, the X in the middle of the controller lights up as if it were connected to the 360, but I cannot move the mouse with it.

you need to have a driver to make the Xbox360 usb cord to control things. you should either purchase a "microsoft Xbox360 for windows" or download a driver. i've proved link to drivers for either 32bit or 64bit windows 7 editions.
