TV tuner setup question?
-
Hello, I was wondering if it was possible to have a tv tuner setup that would be compatible with dish network. I know nothing of this subject so please forgive me if I am misunderstanding any information. I searched around a little but found no finite solutions for this type of setup. I want to know whether or not it would be possible to watch TV on my monitor using a tv tuner (probably external) and my dish network receiver box. Any comments/suggestions are highly appreciated. Please explain in simplest terms...this is a new subject for me. Thanks.

Answer:
If you subscribe to Dish or DirectTV, the box they provide has the ability to also receive local stations. Therefore, you don't need a separate input. However, if you're trying to get rid of the extra $5.00 a month fee for local broadcast stations, you can set up your TV with an antenna for the local market while you use Dish for the rest of the channels. Most TVs have the tuner inside with a capability of receiving the local broadcasts using an antenna. The change to digital signal has made some older TVs not work with this, but you can get a special box (using a government coupon) for between $50 and $75. The coupon is $50, bringing the total to zero for some of these boxes.

Yeah you can watch tv on your computer monitor with something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815116029 You just have to plug the composite cables from the dish box into the inputs on the tv tuner. Just keep in mind that if you plan on recording HD, you won't be able to record channels like TNT or HBO even if you pay for them. These are all encrypted channels. You will only be able to record unencrypted channels in HD which will basically be your local channels (ABC, FOX, etc.). If you wanted to record all HD channels you would need this: http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hdpvr.html
