How do I know what video card is my motherboard capable of?

Need a new Video card, but don't know what my motherboard supports?

  • I currently have the ASUS P5B-E LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131070 I would like to upgrade my video card from a GeForce 7600GT 256MB. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121004. I have been reading and reviewing but there is just so much stuff that I don't understand. I'd like to purchase the best possible card with reasonable costs. Would appreciate tips or help!

  • Answer:

Every motherboard with a PCI-Express x16 slot supports every PCI-Express video card.

you can pretty much by any GFX on the market right now, because you have a pcie x16 slot the only thing is that based on your other hardware especially cpu it might not be worth it to get $200 card, because bottlenecking may occur, which is when one component's performance is limited by other hardware not being able to match that performance

If your mobo has a PCI-E x16 slot then you can have any modern graphics card (as long as you have the space, and a strong enough PSU)

You can get any graphics card that is PCI-Express. Your board supports PCI-Express 1.0. You can get a PCI-Express 2.0 card but it will be downclocked to 1.0 speeds. I would get something from the 200 series of Nvidia cards like a 220 or 250, these are reasonably priced (220 is around 60 bucks, 250 is around 120) and a great improvement on what you currently have.
