How do you back up the disks?

How can I burn blu-ray disks?

  • Alright, so I have the LG GGC-H20L Blu-ray combo drive. It's capable of burning basically every disk type you can imagine EXCEPT blu-ray disks. It is, however, capable of READING the blu-rays. I was wondering... why is this? Is this some marketing scam, in which the company has setup the firmware to not let the drive burn, but only read the blu-ray disks? My main question here: Is there a way I can mod the firmware to let me burn the blu-ray disks? Or is there some underlying factor that I'm unaware of, other than firmware, that prohibits this drive from burning blu-ray disks? Thanks for you time, and answers.

  • Answer:

If it was your intention to burn BlueRay disks, you should have taken this into consideration assuming that you bought the drive separately from the original installation. For your drive to be able to burn BlueRays, it must have this capability. Check the documentation that came with the drive or go to the manufacturer's Web site and search for the exact model number. Here you can read the exact specifications of the drive. If it can only read BlueRay, then you could query the manufacturer and ask them if they plan to issue a firmware update allowing the drive to burn BlueRay disks. That is your only option short of buying a new BlueRay burner which now cost around $200. If new firmware allows for writing, then it is a simple matter of downloading the file, opening it, making sure your BlueRay drive is selected and then proceeding with the update. You would then have to restart before it would work. You would also need software such as current versions of Nero or Roxio to burn BlueRay disks. And keep in mind that each BlueRay +\-R disk costs $10! Make a mistake burning and you have a $10 coaster!

You can't mod hardware. It's the hardware limitation on those drives that makes it unable to write blu rays. Think about those older computers that could read dvds, and write to cds, but not burn to dvds as well. Same thing. The LG blu ray player that CAN write blue rays costs over two times more, if that's any indication of different hardware.
