Why won't my CD drive work?

Why won't my cd/dvd-rw drive work correctly?

  • My computer is an HP M8100n media center pc. It originally came with Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit and a 500GB hard drive. Now I've upgraded the hard drive to 1TB and Vista Home Premium to Ultimate 32-bit. I re-installed all the drivers. Everything seems to be working but the cd/dvd-rw drive has issues reading some song tracks on all of my cd's. In windows media player, the first song always plays and then a few songs after that get red x's next to them. I tried playing The Best of The Who cd, it's got about 20 songs, but 3 will play and the rest of the songs will get red x's. I turned on the error correction, but that doesn't help. The same thing happens in iTunes when i go to import the cd, the first track will import correctly and so do all the other ones, but only the same songs will play. I've had the desktop since August of 07 so it's fairly new and the drive is also a SATA drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Oh and I also went into device manager, but no "!" mark or "?" appears, it says the device is working properly and I know not every cd i own is dirty or has scratches.

It might be a windows media player problem... Try using Winamp or iTunes to play your CD and see if it still won't read it. :) If that doesn't work, I don't know. =(

maybe you lacked a codec pack http://www.codecguide.com/download_mega.htm

I dont think its your drive or drivers. Theres a bad glitch in DRM Digital Rights Managment in Ultimate. We have difficulty with DVDs and Ultimate. Look for a DRM patch on the Microsoft website

The reason could be thatyou are getting red x's is because itunes can not locate the files that you imported off the cd. So you get red x's. Try to re-import the songs again and make sure that they are in your music document, then go to Itunes and import the songs from that document. I don't think the CD drive is the problem.

Try Nero CD-DVD Speed, found here: http://www.cdspeed2000.com/download.html Run the ScanDisc, located on the last tab, you select the read speed.
