Dead video card, how can i be sure?
-
Hi, after successfully Installing additional ram, my computer will go threw the boot process up to when windows should be visible but then goes blank. The system is fully visible and functions well in SAFE mode. I attempted several troubleshooting procedures and then reformatted my hard drive with the Boot disk that came with the computer. The computer functioned fine but the video card ( EVGA Geforce 9800 gtx + ) was not detected by my system and the grafix looked generic. I attempted to use the driver disk that came with the video card, but i got a message stating that there was no hardware in my computer that could benefit from the installation( in other words ). After reboot the screen is blank again and windows is not visible. Threw out this whole process my monitor has been connected to my video card in question which visibly seems to be working, the fan on the card works. So that's the problem I cant get windows to appear normally. My limited knowledge of computers has been exhausted and before i follow my next hunch and buy a new video card or pay 199.00$ to geek squad to troubleshoot i would to get your subjective expert opinions. Ty in advance. **Windows Vista 64bit **Gigabite MOBO **EVGA Geforce 9800GTX+ **6GB Corsair Ram

Answer:
When you upgraded your ram, did you set the bios to autodetect the new ram, or just stick it in and boot up? Bad ram can and will cause ALL KINDS OF ISSUES. Its possible your running the ram beyond rated specs and for that reason its not functioning properly, the voltage setting on the ram could be too high, or too low...Check the rams actual specs, enter bios and ensure the specs listed are the specs you have selected. Good luck

A 500 Watt power supply for a 9800GTX isn't a problem. I assume the card is physically in good condition, so that isn't a problem. Now there are only two possibilities - 1. The graphics card's bios has a problem. 2. A problem with the RAM configuration, memory issues. The first step would be to check the RAM, take out each stick of RAM one by one and see if you can boot into windows with the graphics card in the slot. Also make sure to first set the Boot Priority in the bios to PCIE. No Luck? Insert your bootable install DVD of Vista64. Boot from it and use the 'Repair my Computer' option. No Luck? Now the only option is to flash a new bios in the card. Google 'USB Flash ready for NVIDIA' , exact term without the quotes. The rar archive contains all you need to flash the card's bios, with the instructions. First you will have to download the original bios of EVGA 9800GTX+ , make sure that it is of the EVGA brand and ONLY FOR 9800GTX+ . This step might be a little difficult, but it is sure to help you. If even this dosen't work out, it is a hardware failure and the only thing to do is buy a new card. Have a good day.
Hi, A couple of things you would check is your power supply. Kindly confirm if your machine got enough power to supply your components especially your video card. Kindly post your complete setup to provide more information and to isolate the problem.
Reboot again and try to get to safe mode. There opeen control panel, device manager, video adaptor right click and choose check for new hardware. Then install the drivers.
make sure u have the graphic driver for your card in the window 64 bit version! if u have or after u downloaded them start computer in safe mode ( so u can see) and then install the driver there and restart the computer! Now everything would work but maybe u have to go to properties to change resolution and so on! I hope it helps
