How do you format a memory card?

• I was filming a video that was about 18 minutes and then my camera shut off because it said "card full" which is weird because the only thing on the memory card was that video and I know it wasn't the length of the video because I had recorded longer videos before and it was fine. So I started to google and a lot of people said that maybe you have to format your memory card, but I don't know how too so if you could help me that would really help. I have a canon EOS rebel T3 camera with an LX series 8GB memory card.

  Because it told you it was full simply means that there wasn't enough room to fit BOTH videos together on it, not necessarily that the one simply filled it up. How to format the memory card: Formatting your card ensures that the card is properly prepared to record your pictures. When you first insert a new card into your camera, choose the Format command from the Setup Menu 1. You can now opt to perform a normal card formatting process or a low-level formatting. Low-level formatting gives your memory card a deeper level of cleansing than ordinary formatting and thus takes longer to perform. Normally, a regular formatting will do. Formatting erases everything on your memory card. So before formatting, be sure that you have copied any pictures or other data to your computer.
