How effective is a Solid State Drive when connected via SATA II?
-
I need a new hard drive, and I was thinking about purchasing a solid state drive, but I'm not sure if the speeds will be that much of a difference from a mechanical hard drive, as I have SATA II and not SATA III. Should I just buy a high performance mechanical hard disk (Like a Raptor or Western Digital Black) or purchase a new solid state drive?

Answer:
Read speeds will be much better with an SSD, write speeds, not so much Personally I'm still sold on my WD Caviar Black 1.5 TB w/ 64mb cache 7200 rpm. Works great for me, even though it bottlenecks my Windows Experience Score at 5.9 (everything else 7.8,7.9) But yes the Sandforce driver Sata 3 SSDs are somewhat faster with read speed than the SATA 2
