Why is RoadRunner so difficult to use?

Can I use Roadrunner Internet with just a Modem and Router, no Cable Box?

  • I recently became a roadrunner customer and I have a question about the basic Internet service... I would like to be able to disconnect the cable box and save the $10/month (I end up with the same 15 channels either way). However, when I disconnected the box, it knocked out my internet. The modem was still connected exactly how it had been, I just removed the box, which was on a separate cable anyways, so I didn't foresee any problems. The computer was unable to pick up an IP address. Is that assigned in the cable box and then sent back to the modem? If I buy a separate router (which I have on the way) with DHCP capabilities, will that solve my problem and assign the needed IP addresses? I also have a XBox 360 and PS3 in my network, which were not picking up IP addresses from the modem either, hence the already ordered router. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

  • Answer:

If you broke the connection between the incoming signal and the modem, buy disconnecting the cable box, you will have to connect the two wires together where the cable box was!

You've got something else going on, the modem (black Motorola box) just "translates" for your router and or computer(s) Also, the cable box(es) aren't connected at all to how to modem/router connects to the internet. Check your connections again, something is amiss.
