How to reconfigure Linksys router? (WRT160N) HELP!? WIFI HELP!?
-
I have been trying to set up my wireless router for the past week and i still have no idea why it doesnt work. I did all the basics and i got the router sending signal. my laptop detects it and it says the signal strength is excellent. but i cant go online! i got a page telling me something about DNS. so i contacted Cisco and they said i needed to reconfigured my router and they didnt tell me anything else. I tried connecting the router to my desktop computer (windows XP 32 bit) but the same thing shows up. "DNS failed to look up...." i already tried: 1. Connecting my modem to the router. 2. Connecting my router to the computer (via ethernet). 3. Resting my router. 4. Taking off the password. 5 Made sure i didnt have a router name collision with my neighbors. i am curently running on windows vista using google chrome DSL cable modem (this is the way im getting online right now since wifi is virtually impossible)

I currently am using this exact same router. Does the router work on if you are using a Wired connection (not wireless). Are you using DSL or Cable modem (can't be both)? Did you cold boot the modem before hooking up the router? If using DSL, you have to enter the password for the DSL connection. Contact your ISP about how this works when inserting a router into the picture. DNS comes from your ISP. You can configure DNS manually and bypass this problem if you like. DNS affects primarily web browsing and if you know the IP address of the web server you would not even need DNS. Since the Internet does not do names like www.something.com it only does numbers and people only do words then DNS is the interface service. You type the word, DNS gets the IP and connects you to the web page. Without DNS, you have Internet but no IP to Name conversion is all. Need more help..?

When you plug your Linksys router into your DSL modem, you will need to power down the dsl modem for 5 minutes as well as the Linksys. After they are plugged in, go in to the configuration page of the linksys and click on status. Make wure your WAN has an IP address. There may be additional settings required on the WAN section, you can get this info from the phone company.
check that network services like DNS client are running on your computer by running services.msc, also check you don't have norton on your computer their SYMTDI.sys can stop connection as it hooks in to other services and stops connection
