Get your website not on Google?

Can't get on any other website besides Google, and Yahoo messenger works ---help!?

  • Okay, I'm going to take you through step-by-step of what happened. First, my desktop screen saver was blue and there was a notice about Spyware being installed on my computer. When I hit ctrl+alt+delete, my task manager wouldn't come up. It would say "Task Manager Has Been Disabled By Administrator", or something to that effect. So my boyfriend advised me to install Hijack This and some other software that I can't quite recall. But it scanned my computer but didn't really delete anything I don't think.. I installed a program that was supposed to be from Microsoft and get rid of the virus, but my boyfriend said it wasn't actually from Microsoft/Windows. It wasn't much good to me anyhow because it scanned the computer but it couldn't remove the virus--I had to pay for it. Later, my boyfriend remembered the program he used when this happened to him: Killbox. So I had to use Hijack This to identify the specific filename and put it in Killbox to remove it. He also told me about Free AVG version 9.0, and that seemed to do the trick. I don't think I was able to pull up my task manager, but the popups didn't really seem to come up, and I could actually change my desktop background. The problem is, I can't get on the internet. I mean, Yahoo Messenger works great and the only website I can get to is Google, and when I search for something it won't come up half the time. I tried uninstalling AVG, thinking that was the problem, but I still can't pull a single website up besides Google. My boyfriend says we may have to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows, but I'm wondering if there's any other solution before we have to do that. I appreciate any and ALL help, and thanks for taking the time to read all of that!!

Okay, so sounds like you've had the Antispyware 2008 virus program or some variant thereof. Couple of things: Try a complete overhaul of the computer for spyware and this guide is very good: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 Check the stickies for more help: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35 Also, try this: -- Click on Start. -- Click on Run. -- Type "sfc /scannow" into the text box without the quote marks " " . (There's only one space and that's between the c and the / ) -- Click OK. This will take anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour and may want your Windows disk. I assume you mean you had to update your Windows XP. That's something that you should be doing all the time because people regularly work out little holes in Windows that are useful to them for getting a virus onto your system. Updates fix that. So run Windows update again and make sure that it's set to prompt you. (Start --> Windows Update.) Malwarebytes has been said to do a good job on the virus it sounds like you had. If you run through the guide, you'll probably find yourself using Malwarebytes - I'm pretty sure that's one of the programs used, as is Killbox. You shouldn't need to spend any money unless you choose to. If you don't get rid of the problem, ask for help in the Malware forum (stickies link above) because they are very good (you can't be a helper in that particular forum without being approved) and you probably won't have to go through the hassle of reinstalling your computer. You need to sign up but there aren't any catches and it's a well moderated forum - apart from just the Malware forum, there's a forum for just about everything computer related and the Lounge is for just "kicking back" and you can talk about anything there. As far as I know, Malware is the only forum where you can start threads but can't answer them unless you are approved. EDIT: Oh, I forgot to mention, Ccleaner is a registry cleaner that is free: http://ccleaner.com It's also available at Major Geeks in the download section. Also, stay out of the registry itself until you try everything else and I'd recommend talking to the guys at Major Geeks Malware before getting into there. If you do the wrong thing in your registry you can make a nasty mess of your computer. And AVG is one of the recommended free antivirus programs.
