How to remove some extra drives from my computer?

Move a hard drive from one computer to another without formatting?

  • I have two hard drives in my current computer: a 60GB IDE Hard Drive and a 250GB IDE Hard Drive. I have recently ordered a new computer, which comes with a 60GB Sata SSD. The motherboard it comes with does support an IDE cable, and I want to move the 250GB IDE Hard Drive to the new computer when it arrives. I dual boot Windows 7 (32 bit) and Windows XP (32 bit). Windows 7 is installed on the 60GB Hard Drive, and Windows XP is installed on the 250GB Hard Drive. The 250GB Hard Drive is partitioned into two parts: one part contains solely the OS and the programs installed for it, and the other is used for storage of music, movies, games, etc. The computer I have now is running on a 32 - bit version of Windows 7, and the new one will run on a 64 - bit version of Windows 7. My question is: Can I remove the 250GB Hard Drive from my current computer, and put it in the new computer without having to format it? Preferably, I would like to be able to dual boot on my new computer as well, but it is not imperative. I could format the partition that has Windows XP installed if need be. My main concern is the other data. I have over 100GB of data on it, and formatting it would be a giant hassle. I would much rather be able to simply put it in the new computer with all the data already there. I am grateful for any help! Thank you! :)

  • Answer:

since the motherboard support IDE cable, you could directly remove it. (:

You will need to ensure ot does not rey to boot the machine. Otherwise it will try to load all the wron drivers for the machine and will possibly damage video card or monitor. More likely it will just loop through blue screen crashes. Then you will need to take ownership of the drive on order to access your files. This is done by right clicking it and selecting security. Then go to advanced.
