Why does my crappy laptop pick up faster internet speeds then my awesome gaming pc?
-
I recently built a monstrous gaming PC. I installed within my PC an "Xtreme N PCI Express Desktop Adapter(DWA-556)" I also recently signed up for the fastest internet service from SHAW with a DPC3825. Note that I updated all my drivers, and scanned for viruses. The first problem is ever since I've gotten the new high speed internet my laptop has had a hard time picking up the wireless signal. Previously when I had the regular internet speed my laptop would pick it up at 100%. It now picks up the signal at around 45-55%. I did not change the position of the router or the placement of my laptop. Although the speed of the internet is still relatively fast, I find it just as fast as my previous service if not slower. My PC barely picks up the wireless signal as well at an average of 54%. The speed of my internet on my PC is considerably slower then my laptop. My laptops shaw speed test are PING:22 DL SPEED:20.52mbps UL SPEED:4.49mbs My PCs shaw speed test are PING:24 DL SPEED: 1.54 mbps UL SPEED:0.56mbs These test show I am definitely not getting the speed that I'm paying for. BUT WHY???? Why is my laptop picking up better speeds than my PC? Why is my laptop and PC barely picking up the wireless signal when I had no problem picking it up before on the slower internet modem?

Answer:
if you're running a gaming PC... why are you running on wifi? don't know about you but when i'm in the middle of a game i don't want to risk getting a dropped packet, or interfered signal. wired is the best, i tend to notice more speed, and more reliability on wired over wireless.

I knew your PC was on wifi before reading your question's detail. Wi-Fi literally cripples a computer's internet. It's absolutely horrible. If it takes seconds to respond to a web page click, then a game is going to be unplayable. If your router/modem/whatever has even one wired port, use THAT for your gaming PC! Problem solved. I guarantee you, the problem is the lack of a wired connection. When the connection has a wire, it will work pretty much perfectly.
