Did I screw up my mom's computer? How do I uninstall Prosoft DVD decoder 5.0?
-
My mom got an old laptop from an organization, a IBM Thinkpad with Windows 2000. She doesn't really know how to use computers at all, but when she learned it had a dvd player she wanted to try and use it. When she tried it she found out the dvd wouldn't play, something needed to be downloaded for it. I checked and found out that it needed a dvd decoder to play dvds. I'd never heard of that type of situation before, but I wanted to fix her computer for her (not that I'm very tech savvy). I thought I could bring it to my apartment connect to the internet (she has no internet) and download something from Microsoft. Ugh, so wrong. They don't tell you exactly what to download to fix it, they just give some ideas, programs you have to pay for. Somehow I ended up downloading Prosoft DVD Decoder 5.0. Downloaded on her computer it was called FusionSoftDVD XP (or something like that). It would play a video for 5 minutes then the image would freeze. I tried various dvds, uninstalling and reinstalling, rebooting, nothing helped. The program didn't work for me so I uninstalled it in the control panel section, then deleted the file in the programs folder. When I clicked the dvd icon to see if it would play (because I downloaded something from Lenovo and wanted to see if it'd help) I got a message that said the ProSoft program was needed : "Windows couldn't find FSoftDVD.exe. This program is needed for opening files of type 'DVD' ." Is there any way I can get rid of the effects this program had on this computer? How do I remove this program's connection to the dvd player? What Files do I need to remove? Where can I find them? I have Windows Media Player as the default for videos but the action of playing dvds still seems connected to the Prosoft program, despite what I indicated in the settings. Sorry this was so long. If anyone can help I'd be really, really grateful, thanks.

Answer:
System Restore. Or just download another DVD Decoder. Try this: http://www.download.com/Windows-Essentials-Media-Codec-Pack/3000-2140_4-10662709.html?tag=mncol Or just search yahoo for a free dvd decoder. I don't recommend googling it, because yahoo has now integrated the safe search thing from McAfee so if a site has viruses, and if the download has a virus, it will tell you before you download it. Edit: I'm not sure if System restore is in 2000. And The FusionXP thing seems like it's for Microsoft XP, which is another Operating system, the next one from 2000.

If you want driver for DVD player then visit driveragent.com or driverguide.com and search your required drivers free from these sites.
The easiest way is running System Restore, and go back to the date before you installed that program
1.Try Start>Search, and click on Files and Folders, then go below and click on Change Preferences. Change the preference to enable 'Hidden Files and folders'. Now type FSoftDVD, and start the search. See if any files come up that are close to this, or associated with this. Delete them. In Windows Explorer, (Start>Hover your mouse cursor on All Programs> Up to Accessories>Over and down to Windows Explorer), go up to the top headings. Click on Tools. Click on Folder Options. Then click on the View tab. In the View screen you will see a yellow folder to the left of -> Hidden files and folders <- Under it you will see an empty circle to the left of -> Show hidden files and folders <- Click on the circle. This puts a green checkmark in it. Now go below to the bottom right, and click on -> Apply Then go to the bottom left and click on OK. You will get a Microsoft 'Squawk box'. "Warning you blah, blah, blah... What they are telling you is that you MUST use care now. You will have access to files, that if you delete any Windows system files by accident, your Windows operating system won't work. You won't. (AGHH, I just woke up! This is Windows 2000! I think it's just Start>Accessories>Windows Explorer) In the tree on the left, click on the + sign next to My Computer. Click on the + sign next to Local Disk (C:) Now click on the + sign next to Documents and Settings. One at a time, click on the + sign next to Administrator, All Users, Default User, and Owner, (Or someones name may take the place of Owner) Keep clicking on + signs, and opening the folders. Only click on one at a time, and look through it, because the 'tree' will expand so much, it can get confusing, if you open all of them at the same time. Look in Shared folders. See if you see anything about FSoftDVD. If so, it's gotta' go. After you have deleted all remnants of FusionSoft DVD, close all windows. I suggest downloading for free, Infra Recorder. I like it a LOT better than Nero 7! In fact I don't use Nero 7 anymore! 1.Info about Infra Recorder on Wikipedia.org http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infra_Recorder 2.Download site for Infra Recorder http://infra-recorder.en.softonic.com/
