How do I boot ubuntu?

Trying to do a dual boot with XP and Ubuntu 10.10 using two IDE hard drives. How should Grub be configured?

  • I read the following post on a forum , before I trust that and lose my XP I just want to know if that is accurate? If IDE, only the primary master is bootable, so you have to let grub install to that drive. It will give you the choice to boot windows or Ubuntu. My guess is that the Grub can be found on the Ubuntu installation disk? I was able to load Ubuntu on the second drive but when it boots I get a blank screen with the cursor in the upper left hand of the screen and it wont go any further than that. Any thoughts? Is the Grub my problem? I had to select which OS to boot from the bios screen Compaq 2,0 AMD 2.5 RAM with XP on a 250 GB drive and Ubuntu on a 200 GB drive.

  • Answer:

You have two different Hard Drives Windows on drive c: and Ubuntu to drive d: Grub should install as dual boot, but when you install Ubuntu you need to allow it to include the Window files it ask for. Then it should give you Windows and Linux as the options in the Grub boot menus. It probably can be corrected by reinstalling Ubuntu. I've never had this problem using two different hard drives and really don't have an answer for this. Unfortunately Ubuntu is not my choice of Linux even thought I do use it dual boot one another computer.
