I386 file not detected by windows component add/remove?
-
OK, so I cleaned up my pc a while back I think I ran cclean to clean the registry, I deleted components and programs i no longer use and did a defrag ect. Now it turns out the accessories were deleted, some of them at least. my calc, paint note pad.. I dont remember deleting or altering this. but thats ok I down loaded skype and my microphone was not working and went to add or remove windows components as instructed. i was looking to make sure a couple of file were there i think they are called rec32 or some thing like that and another one.. these should be related to the speakers and mic. i did this because : when i go to the control panel and click voice or audio and click the volume button it would say that it was not installed.. when i went to to add or remove windows components it told me that it cant find the file in i 386 (i have xp) I did some snooping around and fond the file, it is indeed in i386.. Further it seems that when i click browse in the i386 file it is right there. This is from the add components window itself! So it says it cant find the file asks me to browse the default i386 file and then i see 3-5 folders and under it the file it says it cant find ? i looked in the i386 file and 90% of the files cant be open they say that i don't have the program to open them. so i downloaded a program that restores the accessories only and got my calc, notepad and other back on some how i can now click on volume in the sounds and audio folder, when i do click the voice tab i can click the volume and it opens up recording control i go to microphone advanced and the base and treble is at 0 . i can't adjust them. Also under voice in the sounds and audio properties advanced cant be chosen . default devices are conexant hd audio out put/input for both respectively During the test with my mic plugged in it does not show any movemen while I talk. and when i click next (after having read the paragraph) it goes to the paly back and doesnt play anything... nothing is on mute. the onlything i can think of is that conexant hd audio input is the wrong software. i have a logitech earphones with mic built in. but it does not allow me to chose another option or go to advanced or change treble or base.. i think there is some thing still wrong in the i386 folder Any ideas?

Answer:
yeah you dont want to mess with those folders unless you are a professional computer guy/girl. I would back up all your valuable data(documents, photos, videos) on to another hard drive, then do a system restore to a point when the computer was working fine. that is if it lets you. If not try to do a system recovery.
