Computer screen turning black?

Problem with my computer screen turning black?

  • My computer starts up fine and I can use it for a bit, but at random times the screen will just turn black. The mouse does not show up and ctrl/alt/del does not work. The computer stays on and any sound continues to play while the screen is black, but mute the mute button does not work. I hit the power button until it shuts down and reboots, and then the screen is fine for awhile until it happens again. What could be going on? I can't really afford to take it in anywhere, so is there anything I can do myself to try to remedy this? It's not overheating, I have an external fan underneath. It is a gateway FX computer with windows vista, if that helps.

  • Answer:

Re-install Windows, and upgrade to Windows 7 at that. Vista has lots of problems. Completely erase the hard drive and install it. Make sure you move your important files to a flash drive. Windows 7 is expensive..but..you can get it from...certain places....
