How do I find my Wireless WEP key?

How do I find my WEP Key? I'm helpless!?

  • I need to find my WEP key so I can set up my Animal Crossing WW WFC. I have a Sky modem that plugs into the wall. I heard that you could find your WEP key on the back of it, but it's not anywhere there. I researched a little and found out that you might able to find it by typing IPCONFIG into command prompt, which I did. I got an 8 digit number from default gateway which I typed into my browser, and then logged into the log in that popped up. Then it said I had no authorisation and couldn't continue. I'm left with no alternative. It's not on my router! Where can I find my WEP key?

    Sky wireless routers don't use WEP out of the box. You'll need to connect to the router to enable the WEP protocol and to do that you'll need the admin password for the Sky router. Get hold of someone who knows about these things and get them to help, or start with http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/wireless-adapters/13979-default-sky-8-character-wep-key-issue.html and go from there.

The simple answer is you may not have one, but if you do, you might be able to find it through your PC. WEP is incredibly insecure, and easily hacked, and most routers now use WPA or similar. If you are using WEP, think of the WEP key as the password to log onto your network. You are trying to connect your Nintendo(?) to that network, so you need the password, e.g. a WEP key. If you haven't changed it, it should be with the manuals that came with your Sky router. If you can't find the manuals, and if you are running Windows 7, you might try and see if you can see it through your PC. With your PC running and connectable to the network, go to Control Panel, Network and Sharing Center, Manage Wireless Networks, click on your network and right click Properties. Click Security tab, and then tick the box Network Security Key. Voila. The Security Type will tell you if it's WEP or not. Hope this helps.
