How to make a server out of an old comp?

How can I make my minecraft server run on a differnt computer after its already set up?

  • I started a minecraft server on my laptop at my house on the same IP as the desktop computer I planned on running the server on while I am at school with my laptop. I assume i cannot run my server which i started on my home IP from a different internet connection (if im wrong, please let me know), so i am trying to get my server to run on my desktop so i can then log onto it from my laptop when i am not at home. However, when i open up the server on my desktop, it says "the exception was: java.net.BindException:address already in use:JVM_Bind" "Perhaps a server is already running on that port?" The server is not up and running when I am trying this, It appears as though the server knows that it isn't on the computer it was started on and saved its files to. How can i fix this so that I can run the server from both computers or atleast transfer it over to my desktop to run it from only there?

  • Answer:

Having been running a successful minecraft server for well over a year now, I can safely say that you can move it from one machine to the other. Check that you aren't trying to bind the ip inside your server.properties file and make sure that you haven't opened the process twice, as doing so will cause that. The exception you are getting means that an application is already using the port that the server is trying to use, you can change the port inside the server.properties and then when you connect, just ad :<port> onto the end of your hostname or ip.
