How do you get custom/personalized email addresses?

I'm in the process of creating my first website. I'm still to register the domain name. I would like to know how you get a personalized or custom email address. For example, say the name of my website was www.whitetees.com. (it's not actually that ... just an example). How do I get email accounts with addresses like these?: [email protected] [email protected] etc, Do I need to specify something while purchasing the domain name? Is there a way for me to control these email addresses through a free service like hotmail or gmail?
