What Is The Difference Between Magicjack And Magicjack Plus?

MagicJack fried twice by lightning?

  • I have had MagicJack since February and after some initial problems of installing it was fairly pleased with the service. One day during a thunder storm while I was on the computer a lightning strike took the MagicJack out. There was a pop sound and then no more blue light. I contacted MagicJack and since I only had it a few months they replaced it for S and H of $9.95. Okay, that was fair. I hooked it up and AGAIN, during a thunder storm a lightning strike took out the second one and fried it. Apparently MagicJack has technical difficulties in having any kind of protection on the device. Its a real pain to keep it unplugged from the computer until you go to make a call and if you are away from home and a storm comes up, your MagicJack is screwed. Has anyone else had this problem?

  • Answer:

I'm no expert, but, I bet your external ground for the phone line caused the problem. Your phones weren't fried because they should handle up to 50V (ring). The USB port only uses 5V. My current setup is a PC with a 80plus power supply (efficient), a UPS, and the MJ is not using my home wiring. No problems yet.
