Can I plug a Gateway monitor to a different PC motherboard?

my Gateway processor/motherboard is old and crappy.. however, I have a fairly new (2007) Gateway Monitor and was wondering, if I get a new motherboard, do i have to get a new Monitor or can any monitor hook up to any motherboard?
