Is it safe to rely on network connection icons at the notification area?

How do I get rid of Local Area Connection 5 from the system tray WITHOUT disabling it?

  • I have a little icon in my system tray (2 little monitors and a red "X") that says this when u put your mouse over it: "Local Area Connection 5. A network cable is unplugged." I don't use that connection and want to get rid of it from the system tray without disabling the connection. I also don't want to just hide it so when I click on the little arrow next to the icons it will be there. I want to completely get rid of it without hiding it or disabling it. I have Windows XP in case that helps you at all.

  • Answer:

Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. right click local area connection 5 and click properties. uncheck the box that reads "notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity" Click OK. Done.

Other answers

Im not on XP anymore but I'm pretty sure if you right click it and go into properties there's an option under one of the tabs whether or not to show it in the system tray.

Disabling it is the only quick and sensible way.
