Why is iMovie Not Showing Video?

It is lagging on imovie, can somebody help me pleaase!?

• i have transferred my old vhs videos to my computer and converted it to a mp4 so it could be imported to imovie. BUt when showing the video on imovie it moves really slow...its lagging..i really have to edit the movie for my sisters wedding! i don't know the reason for it and don't know how to fix it, someone please help me.
