Why can't I get computer sound on my tv?

Getting sounds from your computer to your tv?

  • i bought a new computer tower today but didnt buy any speakers cause i decided i was just going to hook it up to my tv..well i cant seem to get any sound through my tv speakers..is there anyway i can get the sound to go through my tv.do i need a certain cord or is there a way to set it to where it comes through?

  • Answer:

Unless the tower is fitted with the latest video ports the only sound output is the speaker outlet - or LINE OUT if you have that. In theory you can get a 3.5 stereo jack plug and connect it to the red and white phono sockets if the TV has them (the cable to do this is generally available in stores) - if the TV is then set to AV channel for those sockets - the sound will come from the TV. The sound is liable to be too loud from the speaker connection - so use a low volume. If the TV has external VGA - you can hook the VGA out of the tower too it - some modern TVs use the VGA as the video signal and allow the sound through the Phonos - but odds on the sound and video might not work together. If the TV has SCART then it is possible to get both the video and sound into the TV SCART socket - but you'd need a VGA to SCART lead - not sure how available those are.
