Why does the average person change computers faster than they change televisions?

This may seem like a dumb question, but it is quite logical. I have been around computers since the pentium 166Mhz came out and buying the newest computer was really a gamble because something new was always out every two months. Since then though, I have realized that processor speeds and specs have slowed down significantly and things haven't changed too much, but the average joe still looks for the fastest machine out there just to play games, surf the internet, word process, and email. I just don't get it. I built a 500MHz Pentium III slot 1, with something around 600mb's of RAM, a 64MB ATI and a 80GB Hard drive back when computers were reaching 1.3GHz+ and people were saying that my computer was running faster than their new ones. Then, when speeds grew to 3.6GHz, I changed my computer, and kept my Hard drive of over five years and made a 2.66GHz Celeron with 1GB of Ram, and an Nvidia TNT2 video card. People still said my computer was runnig better than theirs, which was annoying because I've always used my computers for Video editing, encoding, 3D animation, and other multi tasking. I finally built my last model which is a 3.2GHZ Pentium 4/HT with a a 256MB ATI Radeon 9550, 1GB of RAM, and a 500GB HDD running at 7200RPMs. Yet someone told me that my computer runs faster than their 3.2GHz. Do people not know how to take care of a computer, or what? I know junk can build up, but a computer can't get slower, just fatter, right? I've only had three computers and all have lived there lives before I've upgraded, so why do people believe they need a faster computer when their computer made last year is good enough?

Answer:
maybe becuase computers become slower overtime with viruses and memory and people dont know how to make it faster, but tv's stay the same and people only buy them because their out of date or small

"Do people not know how to take care of a computer, or what?" No, I work over the phone tech support and no, people do not know how to care for computers. Computers do eventually get slower, more stuff on the drive causes a longer amount of time to retrieve data, arger programs require more ram, more programs set to boot at start up sow start up, and virus and spyware eventually gets in. On top of that, pre-built computer come junked up with trial-ware that slows the computer down when you just bought it, and your building your own, and would thus not have that issue.
I don' t think they clean the hard drive much... nor do they upgrade any of the hardware or update the software. Well.. that and the fact that most people think newest is best... even if it's not true. When our computer started getting too slow for what we needed it for, I deleted a lot of old files, cleaned up the disk, vacuumed out the tower, and put in more memory. Runs just fine now.... and that was several years ago. And a LOT cheaper than buying a new one. I'd like to get one of those flat monitors though. I've tried them and I like the matte finish...easier to read on.
Here is a complete list of all the significant innovations in TV technology in the last century: 1. color TV 2. Big screen TV 3. LCD/ Plasma TV 4. High Definition TV 5. Digital TV TV technology doesn't really change very often. Other than a few recent changes, it's been pretty much the same for decades. a 1080p TV bought today probably won't be obsolete for at least 10 or 20 years.
I know junk can build up, but a computer can't get slower, just fatter, right? No. Junk Build up can significantly slow down a computer. Trust me. I have a friend who has a 3.2 GHz, and yet it runs slower than my 2.8GHz. The reason? I clean all the crap, defrag it a few times, and the computer runs so much more efficiently. He just downloads porn and **** and it just keeps on building up, which confuses the computer (basically it takes the computer a longer time to search through things {because there is more stuff to look through} which slows it down) and as for why people think they need a faster computer? their suckers, going for gb and looks over overall technology.
