Does Skype reply back to emails?

Why can't I surf on the internet but I can check my emails and use Skype?

• My laptop was working fine. I went to another country and used wifi. When I typed a web address, sometimes it displayed the web page, sometimes not (error message). And if I could see the web page, if I click on a link, I see the error again (something in the browser like "cannot find server"). But I always could use Skype. And first, it couldn't connect to the email server, but now, I connect to it and check my emails in Thunderbird. The owner of the place brought his laptop and could use the internet with no problem, and he told me that previous renters had no problem also. I disabled my firewall, and it didn't help. I went close to the wifi source, I had 4 bars of connection quality displaying, and it didn't work. It's strange, I don't understand, can you help?

• Answer:

  Check your IE proxy setting. It is in Tools-->Internet Options-->Connection-->Lan Settings. Just leave the "Automatically detect settings" checkbox on and uncheck the others.
