Is cable or dsl more popular?

Do you have to reconfigure your wireless router and/or computer when switching from DSL to Cable?

  • I recently sold my house and temporarily live in an apartment. I use to have DSL but switched to COX Cable when I made the move. My cable modem is running fine, DS, US, and Internet lights are all solid green. However when I plug in my wireless router my laptop can't seem to connect to the internet. I've also tried directly wiring my computer to the modem, but it's still a no go. So my questions are: 1) Do I have to reconfigure something in my computer since I use to use DSL but switched to Cable? 2) Do I have to reconfigure my wireless router since I switched from DSL to Cable. and lastly 3) does my moving from one location to another have anything to do with the problem? I don't live in the same city anymore...

  • Answer:

Make sure your computer is set to automatically get an IP address and a DNS address. (You have to do this for wireless and Ethernet separately.) It has nothing to do with where you are. (I take my laptop from New York, where it uses my wireless router, to my sister-in-law in North Carolina, turn it on and I'm online with her wireless router.) Call the number you have for Cox tech support and they'll have you on line in 5 minutes. (Part of the bill is for tech support, so you might as well use it. I do this professionally, and I still call my cable company once in a while. They do it all day, so they know exactly what to set where to get you online.)

We've got to go by several assumptions here. 1. Your router is not a part of the DSL or Cable package, (all-in-one modem/router) but a stand-alone router. 2. Your isn't tied to the hardware address of the original DSL modem 3. You are using DHCP for everything. on your side of the modem. (model numbers would be somewhat handy) Simple troubleshooting. 1. Power everything off for two minutes. 2. Power up the cable modem with nothing connected. 3. Plug the the network port on the modem to the network port on the router with a standard CAT5 Ethernet cable. 4. Power on the router. (wait about five minutes to see if it picks up a DHCP address. ... if it does, you're good to go. Otherwise. 1. Plug the Ethernet cable from the cable modem into the computer and power that up and power it on. 2. Pop a console window (command prompt) and type ipconfig /all It should return some numbers (physical address, IP address, DCHP lease etc. If there is nothing there yet .... 3. type ipconfig /renew (that should get you a new address and connect you to the net with your computer. 4. If you're on the net with this configuration, download the user guides for your cable modem and router from the manufacturer's sites. --- Part two .... 1. Disconnect your computer (ethernet) from the cable modem and plug it into the router (ethernet port, not network port ... and it might need to be port 1) 2. Open a web browser and try to get to the router's configuration page. (likely candidate numbers are http://192.168.0.1 , http://192.168.1.1 , http://172.16.0.1 , or http://172.16.1.1 ) 2a. If it asks for a password, tear your apartment apart looking for the scrap of paper you wrote it on. 2b. If you cannot find the password, or if the router didn't respond to the standard address, look for a reset switch on the back and wipe the configuration. 3. Use the router set up guide (that you saved in step four above) to log into and configure the router. 4. Power the router off 5. Plug the cable modem into the network port on the router and power the router back on. 6. Wait about five minutes for the router to connect to and self configure it's network interfaces. (you should see some activity on the cable modem.) Try connecting to a website.
