How do I record my own song on a laptop?

How to record a song from my keyboard onto laptop with a midi/usb cable?

• All right guys, I really need some help. I have a yamaha dgx-500 digital keyboard, and a windows 7 compaq laptop. I have a midi to usb cable, that seems to work fine. I need to know what software I can use to record/save midi files from my keyboard onto my laptop. I tried Multitrack studio, but it didn't pick up the sustain from the keyboard and the notes were all short and choppy, not to mention it read the strings part as a piano voice. I need a software that will record the notes from my keyboard exactly as they sound coming from it...I want to record some of my original solo piano compositions for a CD. I've been at this for weeks and I'm not getting any real luck. Sorry if I'm not too clear, but any help will be appreciated at this point and I'll answer any questions to the best of my ability.   Well, you can just hit record on your laptop and start playing from your keyboard. The quality maybe be a little shotty but it gets the job done. There's no other way to do it without a way to hook the green sound chord into your laptop and the other end into your computer.
