Playing and Burning Blu-Ray movies? help!?

I've just recently started downloading and burning blu ray movies but I don't have a blu ray player. They seem to play perfectly fine but only if they are an avi file. But i'm wondering if i'm getting the actual full blu ray quality or not by just burning them on a regular dvd and playing it without a blu ray player.
