Can someone explain slingbox to me?

Can someone explain this computer issue for me?

• Ok I'm getting a laptop soon and I was like yay, I can wirelessly connect to the internet and play privately in my room. So I told my mom that idea and she said I can't. I asked why and she said that I can't connect wirelessly to the internet modem and she wouldn't tell me why. Can someone please explain why I can't do that? Does she have to pay extra to do that or something. I don't know if this will help but here are some pieces of information that might explain it. I have verizon internet service, and I think she pays monthly for this. Someone please explain this to me, I've been getting really mad lately and I don't wanna stay mad for long at my mom, please someone explain this to me.

  You need to buy a wireless router. The modem doesn't send out a wireless signal, so you plug the router into it and the router shoots the internet signal out of its antennas.
