Set Up Router Help Plz!!!!!?
-
ok so im trying to hook up my pc and my ps3 to a linksys 5 port workgroup switch router. I have one ethernet cable running from my motorola modem to the uplink port on the router, the 2nd is from the first open port on the router to the pc, the 3rd is from the 2nd open port on the router to the ps3. The pc works fine but the ps3 cant connect it says "attempt to obain ip address timed out". So i tried disconnecting the pc and first connecting the ps3, the ps3 was online and working but then the pc couldnt connect to the internet. What am i doing wrong?! i tried resetting both the modem and the router numerous times but nothing happens!!! Plzz!! any advice or help would be greatly appreciated..(im using windows vista if it helps)

Answer:
you need to buy a router, not a workgroup switch.

Ok, these are one of those questions that its hard to solve unless I am looking at what all your settings are but if you follow these instructions you should do fine. First, make sure you turn on your linksys router and then your host/main computer. Since you have the modem running directly to the wireless router it will pick up the IP address from that to establish a home. Next, turn on your PS3..it will take you through the wireless setup process and ask you a few questions. The information you will need here is crucial. 1. What type of wireless security do you have set up in your router? WPA, WEP, WPA v2, none? Have this information. If you have any passcodes associated with your security have that available as well..PS3 will ask for it. Once that is done correctly then it should link fine. If you are having issues connecting go into your linksys page and turn everything off (security wise) This is reached by typing http://192.168.1.1/ in your address bar and usually putting admin/admin as login and password. Go to wireless tab>wireless security and set everything to none. Try again to connect with PS3 with new settings to none so you don't have to put in any codes for a test run to see if it works. Good luck bro
A switch just connects multiple computers to one cable. A router assigns multiple computers their IP addresses. The first computer you connect gets its IP address from your provider. The second one can't, since you're only paying for one address (one account). You need a router. (Linksys routers have 4 port switches in them.)
I am not sure but I think that a switching router means just that only one can be on the internet at a time.
