File shredding before selling computer?

  • will be restoring it to factory settings before selling. i've the recovery discs on hand. but from what i know, it's best to shred the files on the computer first before doing a system restore. is this because info can still be retrieved after doing a system restore and shredding files protects you better. which files are you even suppsoed to shred and how is it done? i'm mainly worried about things like passwords (for banking, ebay, email, school, etc), stuff i've written and saved on microsoft word with personal info on there and my pictures i've saved on the computer. although i've deleted all of these manually. what're some free, good file shredding software i can download and use? is it simple to do?

    You can use Darik's Boot and Nuke software from www.dban.org, which is the best free utility out there. I used it all the time. However, it takes quite some times to completely erased your hard drive. It really depends on the size of the hard drive

Use Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN") http://www.dban.org/ This utility overwrites data before the OS boots (Windows). Self contained DOS, with simple instructions. 3X overwrite should do nicely. This will render anything on there impotent.
