So I have a WindowXP Dell laptop and I have no idea what happen to it! I was using it and out of no were it turned off. When I turned it back on it took me to a screen that reads : We apologize for the inconvenience, but Window's did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might of cause this. If your computer stopped responding, restart unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folder, choose.Last known Good Configuration to revert to most recent setting that worked. If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power or reset button was pressed or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose start normally: I have to choose from Safe Mode.Safe Mode with Networking. Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Last known good configuration (your most recent setting that work) Start Windows Normally: I already choosed all of them and it take me to a blue screen that reads: A problem as been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen restart you computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps. Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message. disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters. Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS update. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowning. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components. Restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced startup options, and then select Safe Mode: and this screen pops up no matter what I press when the fist screen pops up! What is wrong with my computer! I don't know mush about computers so what is it that happen?? Any help would help! Also have I lost every thing on my computer!?

Answer:
See if you can boot the Dell Diagnostics partition and run diagnostics. My g/f's lappy had the same thing, turned out she had a bad hard drive.

That's what is happening to my laptop right now, but all my stuff is still saved. You should use Safe Mode with Networking and take out all your stuff. If it doesn't let you then you might want to take it to go get checked or something.

it sounds like a driver issue or some kind of Program you recently installed, have you installed anything knew lately? that is the culprit. get rid of it. roll back to a previous date in system restore. that'll fix your problem.

Turn you laptop on and quickly start pressing F8 until you see that menu you kept seeing. Choose Safe Mode and wait for it to load. If it asks you any question, just select that answer to continue to Safe Mode. Then run System Restore. If you can't find it, just use the search utility of Windows by pressing the Windows key and F at the same time. Run System Restore and choose the latest date it has. Let it finish its work and you should be able to start up normally again. I'm sure you just installed something that was damaging for your computer. I'm sure this will work. Good luck.

What you need is your XP install disk. Or, if you made your Restore disks, like you are supposed to, they can help too. Use the install disk. Insert it and reboot your computer. It should boot from the disk. You will know if it did because it will ask you if you want to install XP. At the bottom of the list of options there should be one that says "Repair My Computer". Click that one. If you don't see that option go ahead and click 'yes' install a new version of XP. Then you must be careful NOT TO install it. There should be an option somewhere in there to Repair current OS. That is what you are looking for. If it did not boot from the disk, (if it does the same thing that it was doing) you must change your default boot device. To do this.... Reboot your computer. Immediately begin pressing "escape" multiple times until you get to a menu. You should get a boot menu Find your CD/DVD drive and set it as DEFAULT BOOT DEVICE If that doesnt work try the "F1" instead of "escape'. This will take you to the BIOS where you will need to find your DEFAULT BOOT DEVICE and set it to your CD/DVD drive You can do what is called a NON-DESTRUCTIVE restore, using your restore disks. BE CAREFUL..THERE ARE TWO OPTIONS NON DESTRUCTIVE AND DESTRUCTIVE but the most important thing that you can do to prevent this from happening in the future is GET A DESKTOP Laptops were never meant to be used for eight hours a day, They will ALWAYS overheat.

from what i understand you totaly cant get into windows either from normal or safe mode...and get a blue screen of death (oh we love them) to me it seems most likely like an hard drive issue or else its a driver before paying someone for a diag just try this: http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=615&sid=30&lang=en (we dont care about the model of the hard drive i just needed the link for the software) and burn the iso with magic iso or anything you have (magic iso is free and can do that): http://www.magiciso.com/ if something fails...congradulation your hard drive is dead you might want to go somewhere like best buy so they try to do a backup for you most of the time directly from your pc...or you might want to get a kind of adapter to plug your hard drive as usb and try to back it up to your other pc if everything is ok then it most likely is a driver or some other hardware causing the problem
