Why wont my minecraft server work?

  • My friends and I cannot get my minecraft server to work. It says that it is starting up, no error reports, nothing out of the ordinary. But we cannot connect from minecraft. It says " Can't reach Server" under multiplayer. We both have our internet working, although the internet was down for several hours the day before this began happening. I cannot figure out what is wrong, I tried re-downloading the server file but to no avail. Please help.

    You say nothing about If it's LAN or online but if it's ONLINE: you must portforward (Google it) or use hamachi LAN: make sure you type the Right server ip. P.s you can check if the server is up by typing localhost in ip field on the pc the server is running on.

this is because your computers are going down the wrong port to find the server you need to either port forward your computer (its a real annoying thing) or do what i do and use hamachi which is a free program you download from google and your computer uses hamachi to find the server although with hamachi you will need to get your friends to get it and to create a network on hamachi which your friends need to join then once you have done this use the number above your hamachi name or copy it using right click and hitting "copy ip4" and put this as your ip in the server to do this you need to find a text file next to your server called server and open it find the ip then change it. it sounds complex but i find it easier than port forwarding and you can do it in under 5 mins its really fast if you do it right.
