How do I open a wmv. attachment?

Why video files with "wmv" suffex will not open?

  • Recently I have been receiving e-mail with video file attachments. These video files show and icon of a CD or DVD and have the title of the video followed by the suffix ".wmv". When I attempt to open the attachment by clicking the "Yes" button when I'm asked, I get a second box that comes up and states, "This program does not have a program associated with it to open this file. Create an association in the Folder Option control panel." I have spoken to a few people about this and have been told that it should open with my "Windows Media Player." Unfortunately it does not even though it does open other video files. Please help. Thanks

  • Answer:

WMV stands for Windows Media Video and should therefore be opened with Windows Media Player to do this right click the file and click open with, then select Windows Media Player and check the box that says "always open this kind of file" or something similar ok and then it should open

Take a look at the link below you may need to install codecs

Well the could be a problem with what program you could be using like itunes or quick time and windows media player. now you may have tried to open this with quicktime or a program that doesn't take "wmv". now one thing you could do is download a file converter, such as a video encoder. and what I did when this happed to me was I went to a website and they converted the file for me and sent it to me in e-mail. so another way to do it is also go online and search for an "online file converter"

Select "Select the program from a list". Click OK and select Windows media player from the list and check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and click OK. If you are unable to find Windows media player from the list, please click Browse button and select WMplayer.exe.

You problem is in what "Codec's" are loaded by default with Windows Media Player. You can download the proper codec's from Microsofts site at this link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=06fcaab7-dcc9-466b-b0c4-04db144bb601&displaylang=en Once you Validate your copy of Windows it will allow you to install the codec package...after its installed you should be able to open the media files with no problem. Hope that helps.. Jim
